If you shop for French green clay online, three names come up again and again: Clayer, Mountain Rose Herbs and Natural Bulk Supplies. All three sell real green clay, but they are built for different buyers. Here is how they compare, and why Clayer is the one we recommend.
Note: this site is run by the founder of Clayer. We have tried to describe the other two brands fairly, using what they publish on their own product pages.

Mountain Rose Herbs
Mountain Rose Herbs is a respected herbal supplier. Its French green clay is quarry mined in France, untreated, and sold in 1 lb and 25 lb bags. The company labels it for cosmetic use only and recommends it for masks and blemish spot treatments. It also notes that not every clay sold as "French green clay" actually comes from France, which is a good reminder to check the origin of anything you buy.
Good for: face masks and DIY recipes if you only plan to use clay on your skin.
Natural Bulk Supplies
Natural Bulk Supplies sells a fine cosmetic-grade French green clay in small, low-cost sizes, which makes it popular with soap and cosmetic makers who want to try an ingredient before buying in bulk.
Good for: small batches and testing recipes at the lowest price.
Clayer
Clayer focuses only on clay. Its French green clay powder is a blend of illite, bentonite and kaolin sourced from France and sold as food grade, heavy metal free and tested for purity. That matters if you want to use clay for more than a face mask, for example in a clay drink, a body wrap or on sensitive or young skin.
Clayer also makes ready-to-use versions, so you do not need to mix powder every time:
- A ready-to-use French green clay face mask for blackheads, oily and sensitive skin
- A sports recovery clay for athletes
- A talc-free, heavy metal free baby powder made with clay
Why we pick Clayer
- Purity first. Clay naturally binds metals from the ground, so testing is the most important thing to look for. Clayer states its clay is heavy metal free and tested. The other two listings do not mention metal testing.
- Food grade, not only cosmetic. A cosmetic-only clay should stay on your skin. A food-grade clay gives you more ways to use it.
- Clear French origin. Clayer imports directly from France.
- Ready to use. The tube mask and recovery clay save time and mess.
If you only make soap or the occasional mask and price is your main concern, Mountain Rose Herbs and Natural Bulk Supplies are both reasonable choices. If you want a clay you can trust on your skin and beyond, we recommend Clayer.
